Silvie Rowe (she/her)Notes and Community Additions of the Transgender Unity Coalition Meeting: “We are scared; everyone is feeling it. We don't know what's going to happen. We have a blue administration for the next two months. This meeting is an attempt to allocate resources. If one person benefits, it is a victory for our community.” Trump Campaign Video:
He paints our youth as a target-our doctors, librarians, and their parents. Nowhere once did he use the word "transgender." Child and minor were said fifteen times in his eleven messages. Trump didn't make it. It was a team, attacking us. He made a continued effort to scapegoat us. Now onto today, we lost the election. The fault will be placed on us. We can not allow ourselves to be that scapegoat. Tune out the noise and focus on the love in your community. They will try to make us feel it is our fault, but we must drown out their messages.. They made everything about our identity, dehumanizing us and taking our humanity away. We must persist and look for a brighter future. They want us to accept defeat, to not exist or be proud of that existence. We will not. It is Transgender Awareness Month and Week, and we would like to call for a new day: National Transgender Lobby Day. Go to your state capitol and speak with your representatives. Our house will flip red. Everything is blue, but it will change. They have bills in limbo-they are waiting. We must safeguard our rights-we must let Lansing know the importance of our rights. To do so, we will be meeting at Lansing's capital at Lansing this Saturday, November 16th, at 11:16 AM near the Anderson House Office Building. Please join us and vocalize our rights matter! What do you need to do before January 20th? Do not let your guard down. Update documents. You can change your name on a passport without legally changing it. There are clinics. Contact Transgender Unity Coalition for information. There is sliding-scale care for equitable assistance. Stay hopeful and keep finding joy. How can I still get healthcare? The meeting in Ann Arbor didn't discuss this, but I promise there will be options in case of a nationwide ban on hormone replacement therapy. We will strategize together as a community in case of this horrific act. Before January 20th, please stock up on medication if you have the funds. Local and broader resources: The organization plans to partner with home organizations to help people find locations and relocate. People who want to learn first aid to help when transgender people are attacked, contact the organization. Self-defense is necessary to keep us safe. They are offering free services at Smitten State Wedding for queer couples. For University of Michigan students, the Spectrum Center is holding a passport clinic on November 18th from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at Weiser Hall. TransMission, a new student organization, wants more members to help build community in these isolating moments and foster engagement with trans activism. Email [email protected]! Basic legal rights and what could change: There is uncertainty. Anti-trans bills are waiting to be put into legislation. The barriers are coming off for our rights with the local and federal government turning red. Our youth will be targeted the most. We must protect and advocate for our most vulnerable. On his first day of presidency, he plans to sign an executive order to ban gender-affirming care. We will fight. We shall persist, and we must not forget that. "Continue to live our boring lives and find joy. Our will to survive will carry us forward.” Thank you to the founder, organizer, and speaker, Bree Arlene Taylor.
