The Tides

Andrea Bustillo (she/he/they)

I feel a push and pull,
yet neither of us move,
waves on opposite ends of the earth
waiting to crash against the same shores.

I feel you looking at me,
and I can’t help but glance, too,
but that’s where it stops--
our eyes seeing depths that go uncharted.

Sometimes, I feel impatient.
I wait for the sun to run and the moon to follow,
tingling to mimic their constant chase but still,
avoiding any chance of eclipse.

Sometimes, I feel just fine.
I float in the sea and focus my gaze
on anything but you,
my calm suspended above the water.

I feel you looking at me,
a sun unrelenting,
and my resolve begins to sink,
following the lull of the tides.
