Founded in 2019 at the University of Michigan, The Michigan Gayly: LGBTQ+ Issues was created by students as a way to uplift the voices of queer and trans young poeple. The campus’s first and only publication explicitly dedicated to LGBTQ+ issues, the publication initially aimed to shine light on the ongoing political and social movement towards LGBTQ+ rights. It quickly expanded into a newspaper dedicated to covering LGBTQ+ celebrities and culture, politics, current events, personal essays, and opinion pieces.
The Michigan Gayly received much of its early support and funding from the Spectrum Center, the center for LGBTQ+ advocacy and community building at the University of Michigan. Additional support from the Michigan Community Scholars Program, LSA Student Government, optiMize, and Central Student Government have also enabled our publication to continue our work.
