The Michigan Gayly: LGBTQ+ Issues was created to be a celebration of queer and trans existence. It is a space for young people within the LGBTQ+ community to talk about what is important to us through journalism, creative writing, and art. By providing a platform for young queer and trans writers and artists, we strive to serve as an outlet for self expression. Our publication works to create a forum for LGBTQ+ youth to share their personal experiences, discuss and enjoy queer culture, and voice their opinions.
The Michigan Gayly is also a space for activism and advocacy to thrive. We live in a society which has heterosexism and transphobia deeply ingrained in its institutions, norms, and cultural assumptions. In this context, existence as a member of the LGBTQ+ community feels inherently political to many. In response, The Michigan Gayly: LGBTQ+ Issues seeks to center the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights in all facets of life, including equality in healthcare, housing, employment, food security, and government. We hope to increase awareness of and commitment to the fight for queer and trans liberation among all readers, including our straight and cis allies.
The Michigan Gayly: LGBTQ+ Issues is an intersectional publication. We recognize the racism, sexism, and transphobia which is present all too often within LGBTQ+ spaces, and seek to address it in our writing. We strive to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ people of color, LGBTQ+ people of faith, trans and nonbinary people, and women. Our goal is to create a space where queer and trans people of all backgrounds can be heard and can empower one another. Ultimately, we hope that our publication will help address the inequality and marginalization which occurs within the LGBTQ+ community.
